Infosteel: Nomination Terminus Flanders Expo Ghent

Within the framework of the Pegasus Plan for Better Public Transport tramway 1 in Ghent was extended to the site of Flanders Expo and modern and comfortable infrastructures were built at the tram stops.

The design for the terminus is marked by the balance between two canopies which have each their own character. At the side of the tracks the structure of the glass canopy bows protectively over the platform and the tracks. Eight deduplicated columns constitute together with the collar beams in tube profile a transparent structure for the Spider Glass. These columns are clamped into the foundations and ensure the stability of the glass canopy and its counterpart with steel roof skin.

The steel canopy also has a curved shape, but with a more dynamic character. The shape of the roof corresponds with a triangular fragment of a cylinder with a radius of 106 m, whose diameter runs parallel with the tracks.

The collar beams which bear the steeldeck and synthetic roofing are made of tube profiles and cross the supporting beams in such a way that they are parallel with the longest side of the triangle. The floating and light character of the steel canopy is even intensified by the delicate roof edge.
The complete project unites an impressive number of steel construction applications: cold rolled steel profiles, tube profiles, plate-composed square tube profiles, steel roof plates. The use of steel was even extended to the bearing joinery of the terminus and to the small structures like ticket booths, glass screens, crush barriers and awning.
