Buro Modern, specialized in designing and furnishing office environments, was suddenly forced to leave the building it had rented for years. This problem was seized as an opportunity to move to a larger building with the necessary character and flexibility, in which the company’s vision on office design could be elaborated and modelled.

A plot was found in Waregem, at the crossing of the Gaverbeek with the railway Ghent-Courtrai and along the ring road R35. The plot is unlocked by the Wijmeriestraat, a parallel road of the R35, which was prolonged for the occasion and got a new junction on this ring road.

The building holds a new showroom for office furniture, a warehouse and a polyvalent reception room. In order to maximize the visibility the showroom is aimed at the R35 and stretches out in front of the warehouse along the complete façade of the building. The polyvalent reception room – a beam-shaped glass volume –, which seems to float as a separate entity in the showroom, breaks through the façade facing the Gaverbeek.

The entrance way to the building leads over water elements, which function as a retention basin for rainwater and over a slope along the curtain wall of the showroom to the entrance door.

In the building several low-energy concepts and techniques are applied, e.g. in the field of building insulation and optimization of technical installations for ventilation, heating and lighting.
