For the fast growing division of Barco Communication Systems Barco decided to considerably expand the branch in the Luipaardstraat.
Both for the lay-out on the building site as well as for the perspective it was interesting to introduce a corner turn of the axes between the new and the existing building volume, and in such a way that the new building volume is positioned perpendicularly to the new sidelong parcel border.
This visually created a larger distance between the new and the existing building and was gladly used to bridge the difference in scale. After all, the new building would have building layers of a much larger industrial height (5.40m) than the existing building.

Initially the lay-out of the new building was drawn as pure and homogeneous as possible, and the vertical circulation and the social functions were organised outside of it. Locally a part with double building layer height is provided to serve as a warehouse, but conceived in such a way that it is possible to introduce an intermediate floor later on.

Because of the strong image of the existing building, a dark grey concept, following the dark grey roof tiles and the graphite black window profiles of the existing building, is chosen for the outer wall materials of the new volume. This is made concrete in the choice of the following outer wall materials:
– outer wall covering: dark grey large format roof tiles
– outer wall intermediate volume: grey zinc covering with standing seam.
– curtain walls: graphite black aluminium profiles.

Central in the longitudinal direction above the new building block there is a technical room in a sort of indentation form, with roof glazing on either side, which lets natural light in the working accommodations below. In the technical room large air groups are placed which condition the rooms below. Because of th
is longitudinal position they are placed very central with regards to the production rooms and allow the realisation of an important economy in the technical installations.
